Title: Legal Drinking age

Jc - August 28, 2007 02:40 AM (GMT)
Most states here in the US have a legal drinking age. Most of them are 21 and over. Do you think that this limit should be reduced?

Bluezone777 - August 28, 2007 01:59 PM (GMT)
I personally think it shoudl be at 18 simply because having the right to smoke a ciggarette and go to war but you can't drink booze legally is stupid IMO.

simplyatbliss - September 2, 2007 07:56 PM (GMT)
I personally don't see much of a point in a legal drinking age. It's so easy to get liquor here anyways that there's no point in even enforce it. Getting fake ids or just asking your friend's brother to get them is so freakin' easy. And once you get the liquor, as long as you're inside a private home and not cause too much noises your chances of being caught are so slim. Cops can't even do anything. They just stop parties. You can't face jail time. It doesn't make much sense to even have an age limit.

The first time I ever drank was 13, and a lot people at my middle school did the same thing. Now that I'm older I don't really drink, but I remembered how easily it was to get liquor and how you knew their was some sort of party every weekend.

CertifiedDORK - September 2, 2007 07:58 PM (GMT)
I don't care about drinking, I wont drink because of what happened to my family, kkthxbai.

Chopstix - September 2, 2007 08:00 PM (GMT)
Age doesn't matter, maturity does.

C.Cat - September 2, 2007 09:38 PM (GMT)
There's been discussions about raising the drinkingage in Britain because of troublemaking teens, but that won't stop them - most of them are underage anyway and they're on drugs too.

LaughingMan - September 2, 2007 11:26 PM (GMT)
Really if you can vote, buy a gun, run off to the army, hold a laundry list of other responsibilities, and for all intents and purposes be considered an adult at 18, you should be able to choose to drink at 18.

I know why they put it up so high, because it reduces alcohol related deaths when they look at their little stat sheets, but is the age at which a person drinks really the problem?

If you ask me, the real problem is people who make poor choices when they drink. I think a better alternative would be to take away someone's right to drink when they make poor choices or get into accidents when under the influence, like, put a "scarlet letter" on their license or soemthing. Maybe that isn't the way, but it has been overwhelmingly proven the the methods we use to prevent poor choices is not working.

Jc - September 2, 2007 11:28 PM (GMT)
Well, I have mixed opinions about this issue.

For starters, why are we allowed to go to war for our country at age 18, vote at 18, smoke at age 18, yet we can't sit back and have a beer? Do you find that fair?

Second opinion. Increased car accidents, minors who are unable to maintain a set limit of drinking. Alcohol has horrible side effects. I should know. I have fallen off stairs, thrown up on cops, blacked out to the point that I don't remember anything. But one thing I know I have never done is get behind the wheel of a car while drunk. how many minors can we expect would do that?

Marasai - September 3, 2007 01:22 AM (GMT)
They should either raise the age for everything else, or just lower the age for drinking. Because it really does not make sense.

In Canada you have to be 18 to vote, 16 for driving, and then 19 for smokes and alcohol. Which isn't too bad. I would prefer that they did not lower it here, since the 16 year old drivers are scary enough without being drunk. lol

Jeremy - September 3, 2007 06:16 AM (GMT)
Yeah i believe that 18 should be the legal age. Because you can do everything but drink. Sorta silly, it use to be 18 but then the lovely 21st amendment came into play...

Syarith - September 3, 2007 07:31 AM (GMT)
I say the limit should be reduced to 18 but people in the high school i go to say that even 18 is too old, for a limit. They want it to be reduced to 16 just because.

Jeremy - September 3, 2007 07:33 AM (GMT)
Well I say there has to be a line some where maybe 19 years old should be the limit. Mainly because you aren't in HS(unless u have a late Bday) and you are in college. Because if you can join the military and die for your country or buy porn or even smoke u should be able to buy some beer.

Nikita - September 3, 2007 10:53 PM (GMT)
I think it should stay at 18 right now but ours is going up to 21 i think..

Goes to show, most kids just wanna party, my guess is primarily to escape whatever it is in their world troubles them. But we all have to share this world, and people should only party if they can do so responsibly. I'd say anything younger than 18 and you haven't gained the skills necessary to do much of anything aside from your schoolwork and your chores responsibly.

Kitten - September 4, 2007 06:18 PM (GMT)
I feel it's stupid to have the age limit 21!

By the time you're 21, you can drive, get your own place, you've left school. All these things require more responsibility than drinking.

It should be lowered to about 18. That way alot of students have left school (So it doesn't effect those in school) and they're way more than mature enough to handle alcohol.

But I'm from England, our age limit is 18, so it's not so bad.

Steeleman1 - September 4, 2007 06:19 PM (GMT)
the drinking age should be 16 just because so many people around this age drink and thus this should be the new drinking age

LaughingMan - September 4, 2007 07:06 PM (GMT)
Well just because everyone does it means they should. I think waiting until you're legally recognized as an adult is a good thing. There's a good reason you're not an adult until you're 18..

Shiro Ookami - September 6, 2007 11:17 AM (GMT)
In Holland the limits are: 16 for weak alcoholic stuff (up to wine i think) and 18 for stronger stuff. Used to be so easy to get liquor, could get it from stores at 12. Recently bars can get closed and stuff If they find an underage person inside. I think it's indeed better to have people drink first (At age 16 let's say) and learn to drive later (at 18) that way a lot of people are done "Experimenting" with alcohol. For the other idiots who drink and drive couldn't care less what happens to them and even without alcohol they'd probably cause accidents because they want to be seen as " tough guys"

.Nova - September 7, 2007 03:25 AM (GMT)
I think there should be no drinking age limit, in some countrys there are no limits, and the people over in those countrys are alot more responsible about drinking, they can when they want, and since they can when they want, drinking becomes just like another routine in there life. and because of this they do not really have a reason to get drunk, its all out of there systems and they only want a drink, becauuusseee its a drink, and this would be a great disicion for our goerment to make, but it might be to late because of all the kids who would take advantage of this.

I know i would not but there would be some people that would. and thats the sad thing. if only there were more responsible kids out there... they ruin it for all of us. cause a drink would be nice ever now and then. just to help you relax.

simplyatbliss - September 7, 2007 03:43 AM (GMT)
I think it would be a "big issue" but eventually calms down if that ever did happen. Fact is that kids that were going to drink are going to anyways. An age limit doesn't stop anybody but rather just puts a barrier. If the only reason why you don't drink is because the government tells you not to, then you're probably not thinking for yourself.

Saving up for a mates birthday.

I'm all for having the drinking age limit lowered. Just don't drive, be responsible, and don't spill any! :/

Driver - September 7, 2007 04:34 AM (GMT)
LOL americans, no offence but HAHHAha

In aussie, we can drive at 16, vote/smoke and drink at 18 :P

So, BALL IN!!!!

simplyatbliss - September 7, 2007 04:45 AM (GMT)
Wow, you can drink legally 3 years before us. You must be ballin' lol.

Yes, and that barrier just makes kids want to rebel against it even more.

And yes, every once in a while I like to have a drink, not get drunk... but have a drink.

Very true about the drivers. Most kids where i live in canada get on a boat when they graduate and head to Quebec because the limit is 18 instead of 19. Also the rule about smoking here is you can't buy smokes unless your 19 but there nothing about actually smoking them which is really stupid.

I laugh at the drinking limit because people don't listen to it and there is always was you can get around it. I've gone to places where if they sold drinks to someone under 19 they would lose there license but they still do. Making money is worth to much to worry about getting caught xD

Like simple said getting a friends older brother to buy you drinks work and when your in your own house cops aren't going to be coming around to make sure your not drinking.

They should just lower it. It's not like having it that high is going to make people listen especially if they aren't going to be strict about it.

Ryanplex - September 8, 2007 03:36 AM (GMT)
I say reduce it to 18 for the same reasons most of you are stating, we can do a whole slew of other things (that could protentaily be worse then drinking) at 18 why cant we drink? But honstly does it matter if its lowered? People are still going to drink under age no matter what age you set the legal limit at.

beta - September 8, 2007 07:38 AM (GMT)
lower it to 13. all those kids, gettin' drunk and crashin' their big wheels. :P

honestly, 18 wouldn't be that bad. most 18 year olds drink anyway...

so it's not as if the statistics of 'drunk driving deaths' are going to raise a large amount. >.>

Marasai - September 8, 2007 05:19 PM (GMT)
18 years old would be fine. You can do most of everything else at that age, in most places, and therefore it would make sense. But I do not think it should be any younger than that.

Zunder - October 26, 2007 03:39 PM (GMT)
Hahahha British people can drink at 18.. !!

demon_of_darkness - October 28, 2007 08:09 PM (GMT)
yes to 18

Ambient - October 28, 2007 08:11 PM (GMT)
It should be 18 for all countries, plus in the UK that is the age you can buy alcohol, correct me if Im wrong but Im sure you can drink alcohol at home from like 8.

CherryBlossoms_Girl - October 28, 2007 08:20 PM (GMT)
Well, I heard they made it 21 because that is when the body is done developing, and so it won't damage the body as much. But people still do it, so putting down to 18 wouldn't change much... :/

the last time I checked, people in the UK can drink at home from just age 5

just_another_girl_in_love - October 30, 2007 05:16 PM (GMT)
It's 18 in Britain but I think they want to change it to 21.
If they do that then the people that were 18 when the new law comes in [if it does] aren't exactly going to stop drinking just because the limit has changed. Just like how the 16year old smokers haven't stopped just because the age changed to 18.
It will just lead to more underage drinkers.
I think that 18 is a good age - most people have left school then, and [generally] are mature enough to not be stupid when it comes to drinking - although that's not exactly true.
People drink underage anyway - it's not very hard to get hold of alcohol.

Edit - i'm not sure about ages you can drink at home but at 16 you can have a drink with a meal in a restaurant.

Zero - October 30, 2007 05:24 PM (GMT)
Now if the age limit was 18, I would have just saved $750+..

Syarith - October 30, 2007 05:37 PM (GMT)
I really don't care about the drinking age because I won't drink regardless, however I stand by what I said earlier that they should lower it to 18 in the US.

I'm not entirley sure. But its you can have sip from 5. Drink mouth fulls from 14. And drink to death from 18.

i just wonder why at 18 i can go out and buy cigs but i can't go buy alcohol
