Title: Gender and Double Standards

gamesir - August 31, 2007 02:13 AM (GMT)
What are your thoughts of genders, with its double standards.

Example:
A boy kisses a girl in the hallway at school, or a public place. He can but looked at as a "player", or someone cool.
Now say a girl kisses a boy in a public place, she may be called a slut

Why is that?

Bluezone777 - August 31, 2007 08:55 PM (GMT)
I don't get it either... Personally both genders shoudl be treated the same so such double standards don't exist but I doubt we ever see that happen anytime soon.

beta - August 31, 2007 10:01 PM (GMT)
each gender has standards. however, these standards are different when applied to the other gender. ergo, each gender views itself differently than the other, and applies different stereotypes accordingly.

a man who doesn't play sports isn't a man.
a girl who plays sport is a 'lesbian' / 'tomboy'.

how does that make sense? if a man doesn't play sports, he isn't a man - what is he? well, if he were a woman, then he'd be viewed as being a 'lesbian' / 'tomboy' - but those both point back to being 'manly'.

Demonic Dragon Knight - August 31, 2007 11:22 PM (GMT)
I treat both genders equally if the girl is tomboyish likes to have fun by acting like a guy I will treat her like that if she is girly I will treat her like a girl same with the guys if he plays hard I will treat them like that if they act wimpy or girly I will treat them that way

but yeah those so called gender specific things bug the hell out of me

simplyatbliss - September 2, 2007 07:45 PM (GMT)
I didn't know a girl can be described as a slut if they kissed a guy in public...

AngelKing - September 2, 2007 08:05 PM (GMT)
It's another form of gender discrimination. Simple as that. And not everyone thinks like that individually, just a part of society does.

CertifiedDORK - September 2, 2007 08:07 PM (GMT)
Usually you get introuble for that....

LaughingMan - September 2, 2007 11:38 PM (GMT)
People are dumb, and that's why stereotypes and double standards exist,. We don't communicate, we assume, and we go tell everybody else about whatever stupid idea we have about whatever it is we don't like and decide to discriminate against.

Personally, both Genders should be treated the same. If a guy has alot of girl friends, he should be considered a slut, and vice versa.

Marasai - September 3, 2007 01:25 AM (GMT)
To me, everyone is the same. New age, new ideals. Just not everyone accepts that women are equal to men.

If a girl has a lot of guy friends, she's a slut? WTF? I never heard that one before...

LaughingMan - September 4, 2007 03:57 PM (GMT)
It applies more to women having boyfriends in the sense of being in a relationship of some sort, not friendships. Though perhaps some people are dumb enough to believe a girl with a lot of male friends is a slut...I can't put it past humanity to have at least one of those.

I think it's just the general view of sex from sexes. Men tend to think sex is awesome, and as many girls you sleep with the better! It's old fasioned ways I suppose.

Women tend to think sex is more special, well in my experience. They think sex isn't just a mess around (At least as much as boys do.)

My point is, men don't see sex as anything special, which is why they never see having sex with a hundred girls sluttish.

LaughingMan - September 4, 2007 07:12 PM (GMT)
Yep, miscommunication, the bane of our understanding each other.

I think men can judge what a particular sexual encounter means to them on a case by case basis, rather than assuming they have a mystical connection with everyone they sleep with. Sometimes it's an animal attraction that brings people together, sometimes it's a deeper connection. I know I haven't thought of every intimate relationship I've had as "oh whatever... woo i scored!".

It goes to show different people have sex for different reasons. Some generalizations do apply, but don't apply to all people of that gender.

Kei-chan - September 4, 2007 08:21 PM (GMT)
Then again, it's more of a "Who do you think we are" persona. If you think about it in these terms, "We are but one person. We are not different than each other in the world of humanity" it makes some sense. All in all, it is just the way people think of one another.

Zunder - October 26, 2007 03:41 PM (GMT)
Discrimination springes to mind.

demon_of_darkness - October 28, 2007 08:07 PM (GMT)
Its down to sexism.

Oy... this is just another stupid concept in the world.

In modern society, certain names are given to certain actions. These actions can be performed by different people. A group of 14 year old females can often be found taking a dance class, which is considered "normal" to the majority of the people. On the other hand, you take a 14 year old boy, and put him in that dance class, before you know it, everyone will be laughing to themselves every time they look at him. This is just one example of Gender and Double Standards. Unlike my example, the majority of the time the females tend to get the worst of things. Even after the Women's Rights Movement, females are at a lower ground then males.

Listen to this statistic.

"The full-time working woman currently earns 75 cents for every dollar a man earns, down from 77 cents in 1993."

The physical features of a person also plays an important role in Standards.

"Black women ages 16 to 24 are the group for whom the gender gap has widened the most. In the spring of this year such women earned 87.5 per cent of the median pay for black men their age, down sharply from 101.6 per cent in 1993."

As you can see, those exmaple were given from statistics in 1993. You think that's bad? Check this out.

"In 2005, women earned 77% as much as men"

And even worse:

"At the time of the EPA's passage, women earned just 58 cents for every dollar earned by men. By 2005, that rate had only increased to 77 cents, an improvement of less than half a penny a year. Minority women fare the worst. African-American women earn just 69 cents to every dollar earned by white men, and for Hispanic women that figure drops to merely 59 cents per dollar."

Think about this people. We really don't need these stupid double standards in our world. I, for the most part, believe that everyone deserves a chance to succeed in life and things like these are what ruin many hopes and dreams of young children in America and through out the entire world.

It's just the way that our society is, inheriting these traits from our past. Sure it's a terrible thing, but remember, we've improved a lot over the last 500 years. Remember when women couldn't hold land, or a job?

We'll continue to improve, it'll just take some time.

Stetekai - December 18, 2007 02:16 PM (GMT)
I'm all for equal rights.

there is just one question i wish to ask.

"men aren't supposed to hit women"

we've all heard this one right? probably one of the first thing a boy (should) be taught.

does that mean "women aren't supposed to hit men"?

I girl in high school attacked with a stool once for some reason, a friend of mine said it was "a term of affection"...

right.... so if one approaches me with a hammer she'll marry me...

gamesir - December 19, 2007 02:53 AM (GMT)
Never hitting a girl is like the number one rules in the secret, Man's Code of Honor. You really shouldn't hit anyone though. Also, its not exactly saying women have every right to hit a man, its just saying, being that men are more genetically stronger on average, its just not right.

However, if your life is endanger by some crazy women, with a weapon, I'd suggest taking action, or take a visit to the morgue
