Title: Wal Mart
Travis - March 16, 2008 07:49 AM (GMT)
After graduating high school, I worked at a wal mart for almost 4 years. I spent 2 1/2 years on the graveyard shift and the remaining time on the morning/day shift. I would tell people that I went to "Wal-Mart High School" and the name really fit. It felt like I was at high school when I worked there. There was so much drama and rumors going around that I didnt know what to believe anymore. I got my daughters mom a job there because we needed some more money to pay the rent and other bills. That was all bad because every time I would talk to a female co worker, there would be someone watching and reporting back to my girlfriend telling her an over exaggerated version of what they saw. And it worked the other way around as well.. My girlfriend would be talking to some guy and then my co workers would come back to me and tell me an exaggerated version of what they saw. So after a couple years of living together and working together we kinda got sick of each other. We would do nothing but fight and bring our fights with us to work and all the other workers there would feed off the drama between us. My life at home and work was complete and total stress. The only thing that would get me thru the day is getting off work and picking up my daughter from her grandma's house. Finally me and my daughters mom broke up and she moved out. We continued to work at the same place and she started sleeping with people in my department just to mess with me. Well it did f**k with my head at 1st because it was a fresh break up and I still had feelings for her. I did my share of sleeping with co workers as well. So not only did I have my daughters mom working there, I had to deal with the guys that she has slept with and the girls that I slept with. It was chaos. After a while my daughters mom got fired from there because of attendance problems or something. I continued to work there for another year or so but the drama didnt stop. There was still rumors going around like crazy people all in my business all the time. Besides all that drama, there was dealing with the customers. Most of the people that shop at wal mart in my town are... well lets just say not the type of people you will see shopping in the mall somewhere that has name brands. I would constantly get cursed out for something not being in stock. If I had $1 for every time I said sorry to a customer while working there, I would be a VERY RICH man right now. No matter how hard I worked for that company, nothing was ever good enough. I would never get a thank you or any type of appreciation for anything I did. The harder I worked, the more they would expect out of me. At first I thought that it was going to be a great job, but as the years went on I grew tired of going to that extremely low paying hell hole everyday for four years so I left. Me and my daughters mom are good friends now and we get along great. We are completely over each other and its almost like we are cousins or brother/sister now. I guess time is the best healer. I went to work for a couple schools temporarily but now I have a full time (permanent spot) at a Jr High school (11year olds - 14year olds) and I couldnt be happier. I clean the school and supervise the kids (make sure they stay out of trouble or discipline them when needed). I have only been at the school I work at for a little over a year now. I am still on the low end of the pay scale but I make double what I made at wal mart. Also, I get the weekend off and ALL holidays off paid (something I could only dream of at wal mart).

That story made me sad still though. I know it had a good ending but it still made me sad. :(
I hate walmart with a firey passion. It is ran by communist. I don't work there but I have applied and the only reason why won't hire me is because I don't know anyone. "It is not what you know it is who you know." That is is how it goes now a days. Well anyways. My cousin works there and from what she tells me they are a bunch of freaking commies. And she is a cashier. XD She tells me that they NEVER have enough cashiers though they won't hire any new ones because they are cheap. But from what she tells me I don't really care to have a job at walmart. *sighs* That store is the devil... <_<

As someone who has worked as an associate, and a manager, in the retail industry, I can tell you without hesitation that your friend is absolutely right. It's a common tactic among the corporate execs that run their retail operations: hire only a minimum number of people to save $. The common side effect to this strategy is that those on "the front lines', the associates, get dumped on by customers who b**ch about a lack of help. This in turn leads to a high turnover of associates...and it goes on. As a store manager my biggest challenge, month after month, was keeping quality people employed in my stores, because the budget I was alloted didn't allow for much of an hourly salary and virtually no bonus(or other incentives). I would not ever return to retail work, in any capacity again. I recently applied for a PT job(weekends) at a local plant nursery near my employer(a landscape company). I was told that this store would not be hiring any PT help because it had been decided, by the corporate office of this store(and others), that they would just get by with the workers(FT) they already have. I spoke with one of them after my brief interview and he said all of the FT workers are tired of being paid like sh*t and being asked to work ten hour days on Saturdays and Sundays.
And so it goes on... :grrr

The co-workers don't seem to be very professional. I'm glad you found a better Job.
Wal-Mart have good prices. Did you get an employee discount. It probably doesn't really matter since you said their pay stinks, so I'm guesting you did not have a lot of money to use for shopping.

I currently work for Wal-mart. I am lucky in the fact that my current mangager is actually supportive. He is also smart enough to realize he doesn't know everything. A refreshing change.

I don't like Wal-Mart, and I'll never work there. I just get the impression from the current employees that they don't enjoy their jobs, and I don't want to be one of them.

Well, I must agree with you guys in saying that Wal Mart blows. Just to cut costs they outsource. They end up taking the production of their goods to Asia where they have little kids work LONG days for very little pay. So if you think your job at Wal Mart is bad, just think of these poor people. Also, whenever there is a sale these "workers" are forced to work even harder.
Another thing they do, is this. When they have competition in the area, they lower there prices so that you will shop there. The other stores will suffer from the loss and will not be able to compete with Wal Mart. So, Wal Mart does this until the other stored are forced to close. After they have eliminated the competition, they raise there prices back UP.
(I learned this in Social Studies class, so if this info is wrong, don't blame me.)
