Title: When people say, "Thats gay/Thats so gay"
Syarith - April 5, 2008 09:05 PM (GMT)
Okay. I'll tell you this. I always thought it was offensive to the gay community whenever I heard some of my friends saying stuff like "Thats gay/Thats so gay". I thought it was pretty offensive, because I have friends within the gay community and I don't think they like it too much. Also I dont think people think before they speak when they say that, they cant help it, but just so they can show respect to that branch of the community around I think they need to fucking stop saying that, it's kind of like people being judgemental to others and i hate that with a passion.
Morendo - April 5, 2008 09:11 PM (GMT)
I use "gay" to describe something stupid sometimes. But i don't look down on the gay community. It's just been so imprinted into my verbal lingo that it's hard to get it out. And when i use it, i'm not thinking of offending gays.
Syarith - April 5, 2008 09:21 PM (GMT)
I personally dislike anyone who thinks gay is a synonym for stupid. And whether or not you are thinking of offending them, whenever you're around a gay guy whom you possibly don't know is gay and they hear you say that they are offended by that statement regardless of whether you meant to or not. Kinda like when people can't think of anything to say and go, "Well, your mom-" and then you find out from them that their mom's dead and you try and convince them, "Oh.I'm so sorry, I didnt mean it like that". And then they don't believe you. I know what I'm talking about, I've done it all before but now I don't do it.
Morendo - April 5, 2008 09:31 PM (GMT)
I personally dislike people who dislike others for living a way that differs from them :S
I can't think of any gay people i know who care when i say "that's gay" and i know quite a few.
Immoral - April 5, 2008 10:29 PM (GMT)
I don't dislike the gay community, but I do disagree with their way of life. I use 'gay' when talking about things I don't like (or think are stupid), just as Ryan said, and I see no problem with it. As common as it is to say or hear, if the gay community takes offense to it, it just shows how narrow minded they are being about a fuckin' word.
Syarith - April 5, 2008 10:37 PM (GMT)
You may not see a problem with it but the gay community does. And besides, all people, regardless of sexual orientation or style of anything are narrow minded. Hell I bet at least half of the members on CL are narrow minded.

That may be the case for some, but not all. Some of the gay community uses the word gay the same way. The ones that don't like it should quit bitching. Gay means happy, and homosexuals should quit worrying about a word that didn't even originally refer to them.
Magmortar75 - April 6, 2008 02:03 AM (GMT)
I do find it wrong when people use "gay" as an offesnive word, yes. We've all met people who've done it and I too think its pretty wrong. I don't have anything against gays and their community but the word doesn't deserve this treatment IMO.

Gay does mean happy, but it also means homosexual, which, to the homosexual community is seeing as an offensive remark.
Iceh - April 6, 2008 02:43 AM (GMT)
Gay is just a word. And people who use gay can't find any other word to put in their sentence. It's like saying why do ppl use f**k so much?
It's useless because regards what people use it for we feel like we dont affect the gay people about it...
OMG THAT IS LIKE SO FRICKEN GAY.
Sometimes I wonder why I use gay. Becuase I guess I can't find any word that will end what i am saying because I just wanna get this converstations going on and on.
It's just a word gay, at least its not gay people denying that they aren't gay or something.

Gay didn't refer to homosexuals at first, you failed to refer to the rest of that post.
Why are they so offended, as you say, to a word that didn't originally refer to them? Until there is a reason why we can't use a common word used before it referred to them, I will not stop using it.
sparklynshiney - April 6, 2008 09:53 AM (GMT)
i know a lot of 'gay' people who don't want to be considered gay, they'd rather be called homosexuals.
i use the word gay. a lot. i do the whole 'thats so gay.' thing.. and i really dont care if it offends anyone who is queer bc it's just a word. i have a ton of friends who are gay and use the word to replace stupid also. sooo.
Ryanplex - April 6, 2008 11:08 AM (GMT)
When people say things like that they are most likely referring to something that’s stupid like ryan said. If a gay person overheard them saying it and didn’t know what they were saying was gay then I can see them getting pissed about it and felling disrespected so I do agree with you. Or maybe they would fell that way just because someone said the word gay like Syarith said ;).
I personally don’t use the phrase though, just for the sole reason that it just sounds dumb to say. I also really really hate it when people use it in like every other sentence too, so dam annoying >.> That’s just me though, maybe some of you love to use it or you think it sounds uber cool, I sure the hell don’t though lol :P.

Thank you. Finally someone who knows what point of view I'm coming from and what I'm trying to get across. I know the others have different opinions, but damn it seems half the people that posted in this thread dont care whether they say it or not, they establish it just like any other everyday phrase like "Hows the weather?" and more.
And Immoral, I didnt make that reference because I thought the members of CL would be smart enough to already know that without me having to tell them.
But personally, I'm not saying stop using the phrase. I'm just saying why can't you say it more like you mean to say it, instead of saying the word "gay" when you mean stupid or retarded, why not just accustom yourself to say "stupid" or "retarded" in it's place? That way, the gay community wouldn't be so offended and s**t like that. It's kind of like when youre around special ed kids and youre talking to your friend and you say to your friend, "Youre so special...special ED!" You wouldnt think that the Spc. Ed kids wouldnt get offended, because they would. But thats beside the point.
Now, I will admit. I have used the phrase before but I stopped because of multiple reasons. One of them was because I had a friend who was a part of the gay community and when he heard me say that I could tell he was offended. Anyway as Ryanplex said I dont think it's cool at all nor do I think it should have even adapted into the general community's everyday phrases.

That is so Homosexual.

I'm gay, and I don't mind people using that word in such context. Why b**ch about it?
All words have other meanings, bastard is a term for someone who's parents aren't married, yet we still use that as an insult. Where's the difference?
When I say "Thats so gay." I don't in anyway mean it's slander or an insult to any homosexuals; infact, I don't even think about homosexuals when I say it. It's just a word altered in to slang, like so many others. And, the gay people I've met don't mind, so I guess it's who you know.

Where have you been mate? I take EVERYTHING seriously. Hell I can't even take a joke. Why? Because I have no sense of humor. And why don't I? I don't know. BUT IT FEELS PRETTY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD.

I have tons of friends who are either gay or bi-sexual, and have heard them say "that's so gay" on several occasions. I never really use it, but I know if I did, it would not bother them. Heck, even during the pride parades I've heard them use it.
Red Phazon - April 10, 2008 02:18 AM (GMT)
Words don't bother me much. Especially if used loosely. It is a bit different though when words are purposely used for insult, but still, physical pain is more hurtful most of the time, though it does depend on situation.
I don't use the word or many other words myself, by the way.
Despite - April 10, 2008 06:53 PM (GMT)
I use "thats gay" or "you're gay" all the time jokingly, hell I even use the word "fag" that way, it's just a word nothing to get all hyped up at.
I mean you say you think its offensive to the gay community, are you gay? do you know?
No pun intended. ;)
But to wrap my 5 cents up I even knew this gay guy who was a friend of my ex girlfriend and he would say "thats gay" or "youre a fag" more then me and my friends put together.
It's just a word.
Iko - April 11, 2008 01:45 AM (GMT)
Meh, So many people said that in middle school. It was like the coolest thing to say that. Hell, even I said it a lot. In my high school people still say it, but not as much.

Anytime you're using a putdown, you do it by comparing it to something undesirable. You call something gay, then you're comparing it to gay people. You cann something retarded, you're comparing it to retarded people. You call people lame, you're comparing it to lame people. You can see that no matter what you use, you're insulting something. That is the point. If you want to insult something, you do it by comparing it to something else that is undesirable. The result is that you also end up insulting whatever you're comparing to your target. So there's no sense in throwing a fit over people calling things gay, unless you want to abolish insults entirely.
Arekkusu Kitsune - April 23, 2008 06:55 PM (GMT)
^ Or maybe some just like saying it like it means "stupid". >_>
Like some ppl tend to use the word "rape" as in "getting your a** kicked" as in "Duude, those guys suck! They totally got raped!" People nowadays just use words and give em different meanings. Such as ignorant which originally meant "to not have knowledge of", I believe, and is usually used to call people stupid sometimes.
Not trying to offend anyone with the rape example.
simplyatbliss - April 23, 2008 09:15 PM (GMT)
When I say you're gay, I'm not comparing you (whoever that is) with gay people. I'm calling you out. You're gay.

Pah, that's a weak argument. It didn't originally refer to them, but it does now. The way I see it, Sprite didn't originally refer to the soft-drink either. So what?
Also, I would like propose that the USA is henceforth referred to as "LOLnation" Any Americans that don't like it should quit bitching. :huh Does that sound reasonable to you? 'Cos that's what you seem to be suggesting.
But I don't mind using the term 'gay'. It's like the the term 'nigger'. It's just a word. I'm all for toleration and respect and all that, but political correctness is for fags. There is a difference between discrimination and not being politically correct.
