As my mother continued to drive in her 2006 Volkswagen Eos hardtop convertible, she also continued, and continued, and continued to think of what she last spoke to Zen.
"Zen.. I'm coming to see you. It's been 3 years since we last talked.. I want us to start talking again."
Perhaps her true ambition wasn't to commence speaking to him again, but rather something more drastic, but of what caliber would that drastic "something" become? Or maybe her ambition truly was just to speak, in her mind only she knows.
It was at that very moment that my mother realized perhaps driving all the way to the rendezvous point had not been a good idea. In all her ignorance, she proceeded to drive ahead regardless of come what may ahead. One can only picture the look she will have on her face when she looks on the ground, and not one soul there but all those that lay her eyes will see.
She then stopped in the middle of nowhere, on the left side of the empty road. Sitting in her car, she thought to herself once again, "Why bother? Why should I go out of my way to see a guy I don't even love anymore that I haven't seen in three years? Will I discover something of great importance or accomplish anything from meeting with him? He said the book club members were all dead and lying on the ground when he came to the rendezvous point, but how can I be sure to believe such a thing?...Perhaps I will go see him after all. It'd be nice to see if he has changed and is no longer his former self. It would be quite the miracle." So she proceeded. She now pulled out her cellular telephone and called Fedora and I.
Back at home, the telephone rang. Fedora and I would always race to see who would answer it first and that continued to be our family tradition throughout the years to come. Fedora was always the better athlete in the chambers of the Idaniz family. I do not know where she gets it from; perhaps from Zen, before he and Mom drifted I got to know he was an extraordinary athlete.
Fedora picked up the phone from the receiver, placed her thumb on the "TALK" button and pushed it. "Hello? Oh, hey there, Mom.....You're doing what? No way! Seriously? How did you get in contact with him again?....Oh I see...What about the meeting? How did it go? Who was missing this time--Wait, what? They're dead? Gone? ALL of them?!...Oh..I'm so sorry Mom. So, no more meetings I take it?....I see..Well..I'm glad he told you before you got there..otherwise you would have no one to blame..Now you have someone to blame, but you just don't know who..I hope you find out..I hope we all find out..Omar and I both love you. Come back home soon. Goodbye for now, Mom.." and then she hung up, ending the conversation. Fedora was now in a sudden state of shock.
I come to Fedora and ask her what's wrong. She kept trying to tell me what had occurred, but she kept stuttering, and stuttering, and stuttering....
"Mo-m-m-m-m-m-m-mm-m..... b-b-b-b-b-ooook-k-k-k-k-k-cl-l-l-l-l-l-l-ub mem-member-r-r-sssss....de...dead...Z-z-z-z-en...father..disa-a-a-a--aster...."
On the road again, my mother is now near the rendezvous point. She wonders what to do next. Before moving in, she sees dead bodies and blood laying all over the ground. She notices even her best friend Maria Lotalu has fallen. She does not see Zen anywhere. This raises suspicion. However, she decides to move in. She now is driving slowly and not carelessly as she did to get to the rendezvous point. As she continues to drive her 2006 Volkswagen Eos hardtop convertible, she notices the shadow of a man.
